James built an impressive fiberglass boat—an innovative material at the time—with pointed ends to cut through waves. But once finished, it proved too heavy to move. True to form, he engineered a solution: a three-wheeled "Jinker" made from salvaged airplane wheels and a Holden engine from the Port Adelaide factory. With great effort, this contraption could lift and launch the boat into the sea.
On dodge tides (South Australian term for neap tides), when deep sea fishing for the great Silver Snapper was less fruitful, he’d often skip the hassle and relax with a gin and bitters on the veranda.
