This piece reflects a time before I was born, when my grandfather, Sir James Holden, fell in love with Kangaroo Island during fishing trips with Sam Tolley of Tolley’s Wines. He moved his family to Snellings Beach in a transportable house—no power, just bucket showers.

During WWII, he converted his Holden factory to produce aircraft parts and was later knighted for his service. He spent long hours fishing, sketching headlands, and mapping secret spots in a large notebook. Known for his sharp mind and little patience for children, James lived by a simple philosophy: with enough will, there’s always a way.
